Made-to-Measure Sliding Wardrobe Case Study:
Turning an Awkward New Build Space into Practical Storage in Southend-on-Sea
A Clever Sliding Wardrobe Solution for a Challenging New Build Bedroom
At Cosmos Bedrooms & Interiors, we believe that awkward spaces shouldn’t mean wasted spaces. This recent project in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, perfectly demonstrates the versatility of made-to-measure sliding wardrobes and how bespoke design can transform even the most challenging rooms.
The customer had recently moved into a new-build home and wanted to make use of an alcove within the bedroom. However, the space came with several obstacles that made off-the-shelf furniture virtually impossible.
Rather than seeing problems, we saw potential.
The Challenge
The alcove presented a number of unique design challenges:
• A sloping ceiling reduced the available height.
• The staircase beneath projected into the room, creating an awkward boxed-in section.
• Standard wardrobes simply wouldn’t fit the space.
• The customer felt the exposed stairwell was an unattractive feature that drew attention for all the wrong reasons.
• They wanted to maximise storage without making the room feel smaller.
The customer had assumed that this area would always remain an awkward compromise.
The Cosmos Bedrooms Solution
Using our made-to-measure approach, we designed a bespoke sliding wardrobe system specifically for the space.
We installed the wardrobe across the entire alcove, carefully working around the architectural features of the room.
Our solution included:
• Custom interior storage fitted above the boxed-in stairwell.
• A bespoke angled side panel, precisely cut to follow the slope of the ceiling.
• Two made-to-measure mirrored sliding wardrobe doors.
• A design that concealed the exposed stairwell completely when the doors were closed.
By tailoring every element to the exact dimensions of the room, we were able to turn what had been an awkward and unattractive feature into practical, elegant storage.
The Result
The transformation exceeded the customer’s expectations.
Once the mirrored sliding doors were closed, you would never know the stairwell existed behind them. What had previously been viewed as an ugly and unavoidable feature of the room had disappeared entirely.
The large mirror doors reflected natural light from the nearby window, helping the room feel brighter, bigger and more spacious.
Most importantly, an area that had previously been underused was transformed into valuable everyday storage.
The customer was absolutely delighted with the outcome and couldn’t believe how seamlessly the wardrobe integrated into the room.
